Pietermaritzburg Airport’s Bold Growth Strategy Gains Momentum
Monday, July 21, 2025

The Msunduzi Municipality is taking good steps as part of its efforts to transform PZB Pietermaritzburg Airport into a vibrant regional centre. New developments – from recent airshows to infrastructure and official partnerships – prove the significant commitment from local and provincial levels to bring this vision to life.
From Airshow Relaunch to Annual Event
In July 2025, Msunduzi Municipality revived the Pietermaritzburg Airshow—hosted in collaboration with Fuze Aviation Academy—marking its return after more than a decade. Acting municipal manager Nelisiwe Ngcobo stated the “response prompted the municipality to make this an annual event,” underlining growing community involvement and reinforcing PZB’s re-emergence on the South African aviation map. This event signals a renewed focus on aviation-based community engagement and economic activation.
🧭 Airport Master Plan: Phased Infrastructure Growth
The first draft of the renewed Airport Master Plan outlines a phased growth strategy covering short-, medium-, and long-term developments to 2035:
- Short-to-Medium Term (2026–2028):
- Add a second airline to diversify routes and improve affordability
- Upgrade terminal spaces: expand office/retail areas, upgrade baggage handling and digital check-in.
- Expand apron space to accommodate increased flight traffic
- Long-Term Vision (2030–2035):
- Construct a cargo facility featuring an agro-cargo terminal and dry port to serve nearby industrial zones such as Mkondeni.
- Extend the runway, enabling larger aircraft and low-cost carrier operations
- Separate general aviation from commercial services to improve operational efficiency.
These strategic expansions, once complete, would transform PZB into a modern, multi-functional aviation and logistics hub.
Strategic Partnerships: MoU with ACSA
Officials are in advanced discussions to ink a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), the state-owned enterprise overseeing South Africa’s major airports. The MoU seeks to integrate Pietermaritzburg into national aviation initiatives and unlock access to ACSA-managed infrastructure, funding, and route development expertise. This partnership could accelerate the introduction of new routes, including Cape Town and Gqeberha, currently under feasibility assessment.
Provincial Engagement & Government Site Visits
The KwaZulu‑Natal Provincial Department of Transport—under the national Department of Transport—conducted a site inspection of PZB in July 2025, assessing progress and reinforcing governmental support. Meanwhile, the airport’s expansion efforts have been included in the municipality’s Integrated Development and Capital Budget Plans, potentially unlocking provincial funds for runway extensions and supporting infrastructure.
Local Stakeholder Backing & Economic Benefits
Local and regional stakeholders are enthusiastic. Msunduzi Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla emphasised that research confirms demand for flights to Cape Town and Gqeberha, with business and government travelers especially benefiting from a nearby airport. Economic groups like the Pietermaritzburg & Midlands Chamber of Business (PMCB) echo these views; CEO Melanie Veness says new routes would unlock fresh trade opportunities and stimulate economic expansion.
Local civic association MARRC welcomed the development’s potential to reduce reliance on King Shaka International, boost tourism, and generate jobs. They urged that infrastructure upgrades (water, electricity) and local employment be ensured for full community impact.

Broader Regional Impacts

With a re-vamped airshows, a phased master plan evident, purposeful cooperation from ACSA and meaningful government support, expansion at Pietermaritzburg Airport is starting to happen. Both local and provincial stakeholders are of the opinion that this all-encompassing expansion will not only stimu-late regional economy, but also raise the city’s profile as one of the country’s avi-ation leaders.
