London Gatwick Takes the Lead in Economic Innovation with Ambitious Growth Strategy
Wednesday, November 20, 2024
Gatwick Airport is set to transform the regional economy with its visionary Airport Economic Zone (AEZ), a strategic initiative designed to unlock unprecedented growth. The project was the highlight of discussions at Gatwick’s annual Economic Summit, where business leaders and local authorities gathered to explore pathways for driving prosperity.
The AEZ will bring together a powerhouse taskforce of economic development experts, business leaders, and representatives from the UK’s Department for Business and Trade. Early next month, this group will collaborate with stakeholders across six local authority areas surrounding Gatwick to craft strategies aimed at boosting trade, tourism, and investment in the region.
As a vital economic engine, Gatwick Airport already supports 76,500 jobs and contributes £5.5 billion annually to the UK economy. The AEZ seeks to build on this foundation, aligning with priorities set out in the Government’s Industrial Strategy Green Paper to position the region as a hub for global business and innovation.
Complementing the AEZ is Gatwick’s proposed £2.2 billion plan to repurpose its standby Northern Runway for routine operations. If approved, this bold move will create 14,000 additional jobs and inject £1 billion into the economy each year. To ensure the region fully benefits, Gatwick plans to roll out an Employment, Skills, and Business Strategy supported by a £20 million fund to enhance opportunities for businesses and residents alike.
With its strategic investments and forward-thinking initiatives, Gatwick Airport is poised to redefine the economic landscape of the region, fostering a future of sustained growth, innovation, and opportunity.
Stewart Wingate, CEO, London Gatwick said: “London Gatwick has a strong track record as a catalyst for regional growth. We are excited to be working with the community and business leaders to leverage what has already been achieved, promote the many benefits of the region and attract future inward investment.
Dawn Redpath, Surrey County Council’s Director for Economy and Growth said: “We recognise the contribution Gatwick makes to our regional economy, creating employment opportunities, driving investment and supporting business growth.
“We know there is potential for the airport to deliver further benefits in the future and look forward to playing an active role in the Taskforce on behalf of our businesses and communities.”
